Hotel Restaurant Euskadi in Espelette France

Staying with a family in a new area is one of the best ways to really get to know the area. But what if you don’t speak the language? The next best way is to stay at a family run hotel just like the Hotel Restaurant Euskadi in Espelette France.

The hotel has been welcoming visitors to this corner of the Pays Basque since the middle of the 19th century. It was enlarged in the 1950’s and underwent a renovation in 2007. Also, in the 50’s, exhibiting patriotic pride, they decided to rename the hotel changing it from the family name ‘Jaureguy’ to Hotel Euskadi. Euskadi is the Basque word for “Pays Basque.”

That pride of place is still in evidence today. Cords of Espelette peppers sway against the whitewashed walls. Basque-red shutters frame the windows as thick, green ivy curls and climbs up the walls ~ all iconic symbols of the area.

If you are just there just for the day, the restaurant and bar are must stops. The bar offers tapas and regional drinks. An invitation is extended to all to come enjoy the food and join in the discussions between the rugby and soccer fans. And of course, talk about the unique Basque culture. Questions welcome!

The restaurant offers a changing seasonal menu but for first time visitors, don’t miss the Menu Ezpeleta, a 4-course meal of iconic Basque specialities. For the first course, choose between Elzekaria, a rich vegetable soup or rillettes of Banka trout. Second course is either a pipérade, eggs scrambled with tomatoes and peppers served with a side of ham or Trixpotxa maison, a homemade sausage. Are you full yet? On y va…

To the third course, either an Axoa, the Basque veal dish with peppers or the daily special. And for dessert, you have a choice but you should choose the Gâteau Basque.

Bonne continuation … en Pays Basque.
